Elliott H. King is a Professor of Art History at Washington and Lee University and an internationally recognized specialist in surrealism. He is the author of Dalí, Surrealism, and Cinema (2007) and, with Abigail Susik, co-editor of Radical Dreams: Surrealism, Counterculture, Resistance (2022). As an independent curator, he has organized major exhibitions worldwide, including Dalí/Halsman (Morohashi Museum of Modern Art, Japan), Magritte: Reflections of Another World (Baker Museum of Art, Naples, Florida), and Dalí: The Late Work (High Museum of Art, Atlanta). His 2012 exhibition, Frida and Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting (High Museum of Art), remains the largest presentation of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's combined work ever mounted, drawing nearly 354,000 visitors. King's scholarship has appeared in exhibition catalogues for institutions such as the Centre Georges Pompidou, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the National Gallery of Victoria, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Hamburger Kunsthalle. He is a founding member and Vice President of the International Society for the Study of Surrealism and serves as Reviews Co-Editor for The International Journal of Surrealism. Professor King’s presentation aligns with the current exhibit, Frida: Beyond the Myth, at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the exhibition’s only East Coast venue and one of only two venues nationwide. After hearing Professor King’s presentation, attendees may still travel to Richmond to see the exhibit through September 28th. Seating is limited and preregistration is required.
